Help for the LGBTQ + Community

Domestic abuse is a serious issue for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community. It’s been reported that approximately 25% of LGBTQ+ individuals experience violent, abusive, or threatening relationships with partners or ex-partners*.

There are additional factors that may act as barriers for the LGBTQ + community to seek help:

  • The fear of being ‘outed’ to friends, family or agencies when you are not ready.

  • The misconception that domestic abuse is only physical abuse when it can be emotion, financial, sexual and psychological.

  • Fear of homophobic reactions or a lack of understanding from the police, alienation from family or friend or that there is no help or refuge for someone who is LGBTQ+.

  • Dependency on a partner to remain part of the ‘scene’ and the fear that losing the partner will result in rejection by the community that offers so much support.
